Part 16

Surprisingly, the way back to the bridge of the ship was clear, save for the patches of spores which he skirted easily. The door to the bridge opened as he approached, and a gun leveled at his face.
"Stand down, he's obviously not one of those things." came a call from Captain Andere on the level above him, and the pistol dropped.
"Sorry mate, didn't think there were more people around." The voice was accented, and wielded by a man with dark skin and matching hair. The dress uniform he was wearing was a mix of well pressed and shredded in places. No memories of the man surfaced in Kevin's mind, so he must not have known him before.
"My apologies, sir. I was off fixing something important." Kevin moved past the stranger, mostly ignoring him. He had to be a senior officer based on the uniform and all the medals on it, but he had other worries at the moment. He turned his attention to Captain Andere. "Sir, I can report that we have gotten the engines online. Corporal Blanchard was essential to the task. I couldn't have done it without her."
"And where is she now," the captain asked as he reached the lower deck.
"She headed to comms in hopes that we could clear the infestation there, and maybe get some contact established."
The captain nodded. "Good. That was the next task I had planned."
"And why," interjected the man he didn't know, "didn't you accompany her? Something like that seems dangerous, better done in a group."
"You'll have to excuse Rear Admiral Graves, he's under a unique set of stresses." The sarcasm was practically dripping from the captains words.
"Well my apologies, but my random assignment to this vessel didn't say anything about KILLER MUSHROOMS." The veins on Rear Admiral Graves' neck popped out and his face went a shade of purple. I'll remind you Captain of who holds rank here."
"And I'll remind you Admiral that you were put here last minute by the brass, otherwise I wouldn't need to hear you bitch-" A toothy maw closed down on the captain as one of the fungus creatures had sailed through the air while the leadership had been arguing.
