Part 30

Kevin typed into the console querying an overload procedure. Maybe there was an electrical pulse he could send through the system that would take out the Conglomeration - oh, look, there was the proper noun - and hopefully not fry the ability to send his information. That sounded farfetched as he thought it. Maybe there were explosives...

He looked around the room he was in for at least the fourth time - nothing explosive in here - and then scanned the room behind the glass. There weren't any of the red barrels in the room that signified something that would explode in fire. The hard drives could explode electrically he supposed, but he wasn't sure that he wouldn't destroy what he needed. Looking up... oh, okay, a catwalk. He could maybe drop that down onto the Conglomeration's... Well head didn't seem like the right word, but it was the closest.

    Who designed this place?

Okay, so catwalks were usually bolted to something, they were usually bolted to a hanging something or other, but... no this one was attached to the wall on the opposite side. If he could sneak back there without attracting the attention of the conglomeration, he could pump a few shots into the anchors - hopefully breaking them - before the mass of mouths and tentacles would notice him.

Okay... let's think about this. Pump a few shotgun rounds into the anchors, if that didn't do it, finish off the clip from the Breaker. Shit... he remembered he didn't have any more shells left for the shotgun. Okay, maybe the last heat sink would do it and he could fall back to the pistol if that didn't cut it... There weren't a lot of those left either though...

He scanned the floor in the next room, hoping the bodies might have the tell-tale signs of spare ammunition. No, not that one, he was a doctor; nor that one, a mechanic; a scientist; a doctor, no ammo on them at all. That one - he was one of the security detail - he might have a spare magazine or a heat sink on him. And there was another security officer off to the left of the scattered corpses. A few more at the far side of the room...

Okay so the plan would be to sneak in, search the nearest corpse to the right, float around unseen to the  one on the left, and then continue to hook around to the back of the room, picking up all the ammunition that he could. He was hoping for shotgun shells: he would take what he could get. He gathered his nerves, preparing himself mentally. This was going to be fine, he was very sneaky... Probably... He grabbed the emergency release on the door, noticing that the hand scanner was dead - he was pretty sure he didn't have access even if it weren't - and pulled the door open with all his might.

Suddenly the air was filled a shrieking alarm, red lights flashing from a light directly above the door he was accessing, while - barely audible over the alarms themselves - a female voice came over the intercom: "WARNING: THERE HAS BEEN A BREACH IN THE MAINFRAME ::: WARNING: THERE HAS BEEN A BREACH IN THE MAINFRAME ::: WARNING: THERE HAS BEEN A BREACH IN THE MAINFRAME" The Conglomeration turned some of its eyes into the direction of the flashing lights, and in turn, directly... onto... him...

"You gotta be fucking kidding me." Kevin cursed.
