Part 3

As the creature leapt at him, Kevin instinctively put his arm up to protect his face. This proved to be a mistake. The creature's massive sharp teeth drilled themselves into his shielding arm. The pain shot up his arm making him cry out once again. Kevin kicked at the beast to no avail. He kicked and kicked again, connecting with soft tissue under the beasts gnashing teeth.

The creature fell away from Kevin, releasing his arm. It backed away a few steps, turning to re-analyze its potential victim. The pain pulsed through Kevin's arm, blood dotted the floor around the gun that he had dropped.

    The gun!

Kevin reached down and fumbled for the weapon he had foolishly dropped when the thing had lunged at him. As he searched for the weapon, he made sure not to take his eyes off of the creature. Finally his fingers touched the cold steel of the pistol. As he hefted the weapon, the beast started to charge again. Kevin fired as he leveled the weapon, missing with his first round but connecting with the second and third. He dodged this time as the beast lunged at his face, then turned and shot his borrowed weapon twice more, hitting the thing center mass and putting the creature down with a sickening splat. Kevin kept his gun at the ready, scanning the room as he moved at the corpse, his injured arm protesting against the weight of the firearm.

The creature lay still on the floor, a deep red, almost black blood, oozing from the holes blown in the thing. Examining the body, the yellow skin of the creature was leathery, and coated with a fine dust. The dust seemed to be similar to that making up the hazy atmosphere, and by the looks of it emanated from the creature. The things tongue lolled from its mouth, looking somewhat like a limp fish. Kevin pumped another round into the body, and was finally sure the thing was dead.

"Okay... That thing sucked," he said aloud. A sound echoed through the room, coming from the left corridor. "I'd rather not deal with more of these just yet." His arm pulsed angrily. "Especially if I'm hurt." Guess I'll head the other way..."

Kevin moved into the hall to the right, skirting around a flame that erupted from a vent in the deck. On the floor below him he noticed color coded lines, sporadically broken up by writing and an arrow. There were three lines below him currently: a red line, emblazoned MedBay, obviously leading the way he had come from; a green line with the word Engineering, also headed in the opposite direction; and a blue line, headed the same way he was, this one called Bridge.

A sudden memory flashed into Kevin's head. He walked into a room through a set of blast doors. The room was large and full of people and large screens. The bridge. He approached an older man with graying hair and a clean shaven face. The man turned to him and smiled. He oppened his mouth to speak...

The memory ended and Kevin found himself once again in the present moment. He sighed, wondered who he had just seen, and continued toward the bridge.
