Part 5

Kevin stared at the ceiling a minute or two longer, letting himself calm down from his panic attack. The thought came to him about how incredibly lucky he was that none of the fungus monsters were in theis room. He made an attempt to figure out what this room was through his shoddy memory and clues in the room itself.

As far as he could tell it was a closet of some sort, either maintenance or storage. Possibly both, that was always an option. As he got to his feet, he noticed a small medical pack stuffed behind a box of... something that looked like pens, but didn't write when he tried them on his arm. He grabbed the medpak from behind the not pens and pocketed one of those as well, perhaps they would reveal a use in the future. He thought about using the medpack now, looked at his bleeding arm and weighed how hurt he was against how long he guessed it might be until he may find another one. Ultimately he decided to hold onto it for later. He could find another one soon, or he may get more hurt before then. Either way holding it seemed smart.

Kevin opened the door between the storage room and the next room, and looking into it, it looked to be the bridge. As he moved into the large room, the first the he noticed was the view. The viewscreen was half filled with the planet that they orbited, while the other half was full of stars. The planet below was a smattering of greens and blues with a large storm of white clouds gathering on the horizon over what looked to be a vast desert. He didn't recognize the stars beyond the horizon, but he also couldn't remember anything about his life before an hour ago. He admired the beauty until he noticed a beast running at him. It leapt at him and he sidestepped, sinking the axe in the fungus thing's side. It was a clean kill.

He was so excited that he didn't see the much larger beast before it slammed into him from behind. It ran through him, its bony skull knocking him to the side, laying him out, sprawled on the once polished  bridge floor. He stood, shakily, and noticed two more of the smaller beasts approaching from either side, watching the larger one as though showing respect to the obvious alpha among them.

The bony headed fungus, for as strange as that term sounded, there could be no mistake that that was bone protruding from the thing's head, let out a bellowing roar, and the two subservient fungi ran towards Kevin with their own roars of the hunt. His blood froze at the sound, but he willed his entire being into motion. He ducked to the left and attempted a roll to the right, but was caught by the claws of one of the beasts. The second one turned back and bit his thigh. Kevin screamed out in pain and pulled away from his attackers. The alpha was on top of him again and he barely made it out of the way at the last second.

Kevin pumped his legs, the pain pulsing with each step as he ran back to the storage room. The smaller beasts ran alongside him and he could hear the alpha behind him, chasing. He crossed the threshold to the room as the alphas teeth snapped down behind him, missing him by a hand's width. The door frame crumpled a bit as the alpha slammed into it. It snapped its jaws repeatedly as it attempted to reach the snack that was Kevin. He caught his breath and thanked his instincts to keep the medpack.

The alpha backed away from the door, and the two smaller creatures made their way forwards. Kevin pulled his pistol and shot a few rounds into each. They fell, and the alpha bellowed again before continuing to slam its skull in the doorframe.

Kevin broke into the medpack and started patching himself up, watching the the alphas futile attempts to reach him. As the beast kept pummeling the door frame, Kevin weighed his options for getting out of the room: the vents were out of the question, so the door was the only direction, but the alpha was going to be prove an issue. He didn't have many rounds left for his pistol, and his axe would get him a tad too close to those teeth for comfort. As doom clanged at the door, he scoped out the room  again.

Then, he spotted it: a red barrel behind some boxes in the corner. On it was etched a small fire, meaning it was explosive, right?
