Part 6

His bleeding finally stopped by the bandages in the medpak, his body still sore, though that would go away when the pain meds kicked in. Overall, Kevin felt okay... Excluding the fact that he was between imminent toothy death and severe claustrophobia, and he wasn't sure about what was worse. He returned his attention to the red barrel with the fire etched on it. This would be useful. He pulled the cannister to the center of the room and thought out a plan.
He attempted to lift the barrel over his head, but it was far too heavy. He put it on its side and rolled it a bit. This might work... He pushed it towards the door, and as it rolled, the alpha creature pulled away from the door inquisitively. The barrel stopped just short of the bent door frame, and the alpha, seeing no threat, slammed into the frame again. The barrel shuddered a little toward the creature and Kevin took aim at the barrel.
He took a deep breath and fired.
He was met with a plink of bullet on metal, rather than the immediate explosion he was hoping for. He shot a few more times, keeping in mind his dwindling stash of ammunition. Plink. Plink. Plink. then finally BOOM! as the contents of the barrel were released explosively. The beast let out an awful roar, and in the aftermath of the destructive force, the alpha creature fell to the ground in no less than four pieces. Kevin took a breath and calmed himself while listening for other beasts that could be approaching. He couldn't hear anything approaching, but he wasn't sure if it was because he couldn't hear or if there was actually nothing coming.
He walked back out onto the bridge and looked around. No monsters were running at him, and the bridge door remained closed. a ringing started in his ears, which was a relief because he was pretty sure he was going to need to hear. Looking back out the viewport at the planet below, the storm over the desert now out of view, and the precipice of night was touching over the shores of another continent. It gave Kevin a sense of wonder and smallness. He had been to space before, obviously he had to have gotten here somehow, but with no memories of how he got here, this was a new experience. He basked in it.
    "Beautiful isn't it?"
Kevin startled and spun, gun raised searching the room for the source of the voice. He yelled out, "Show yourself!"
There was no movement in the room, but the voice rang out again. "There's no need for that. Even if you were able to see me, I'm up here by the way, I happen to be behind eight inches of impact-proof glass." Kevin looked up toward the back corner of the room and noticed a man with graying hair and five o'clock shadow, waving at him from behind the glass of another room.
"Come up here and let's talk."
