Part 7
Kevin ascended the staircase to the floor above where the captains office overlooked the bridge. He noted the door had a red light above the access pad. The door was windowed and on the other side of the glass was the man who had spoken to him.
"Glad to see you're awake Lieutenant. I thought your injuries were more severe and... well with everything that's going on, its good to see a familiar face." The man looked familiar to Kevin. The graying hair, the clean shave, and after a moment a memory hit him. The man with the gray hair walked through a set of blast doors, entering a large room as Kevin stood alongside other men and women, all in uniform. The man opened his mouth and -
"Lieutenant? You doing alright?"
"My apologies, sir, things are a bit murky in my head right now." He recognized the man as his captain, but had no idea what to call him. "I don't have many memories before waking up earlier, sir."
"That can be excused Lieutenant, there is a lot going on. I am Captain Andere, commander of this little expedition," he explained. "While we made our way through the cosmos, something knocked our communications array loose. When we sent a tech on a spacewalk, he came inside with some sort of spore on them. That's what unleashed those things you've been fighting. The spore somehow survived the vacuum of space and the airlock's pressurization and decontamination protocols and spread like a wildfire when it came inside.
"So we have an issue," Captain Andere continued, "we have no comms, long-range or interior, and we have no engines. Thankfully our orbit was steady when everything started shutting down, but we're at the mercy of the spaceways right now. Well... that and the troop of mushroom things in our ship. To be honest, I'm a bit at a loss." The captain looked tired.
"Is there any way we can get out of here?" Kevin asked.
"I suppose we could try to get the engines started again. Not that we haven't tried already, mind you. I sent Corporal Blanchard to the engine room a day ago and I haven't heard from her since. Obviously she failed..." Captain Andere looked around his office, moved to his desk, and started searching through drawers. He returned to the door and opened it with a code. "You'll probably need one of these in your travels," he passed over a medkit and a keycard, "and that keycard will get you into engineering." He shut the door between them again.
Kevin looked at the keycard and pocketed it in his borrowed medical garb. "Thank you captain. I'll see what I can do."
"Good. While you do that, I'll craft a message to send to mission control. Hopefully they'll have more information on how to proceed. If not... well we can figure that out when we get there."
Kevin descended the stairs again, taking stock of everything he had learned.
