Part 29
Kevin inserted the drive into an open port in the console in front of him, ignoring the horrible sight of the conglomeration eating his friend, trying not to think of exactly what it was. Was it the final form of the fungal freaks he had been fighting? Was it their patron? Their god? Didn't he just say he wasn't going to fixate on it? Why wasn't the drive connecting?
He tapped the console and the screen - which had been a cheery, compliant blue-green - shifted suddenly to a blazing red. The type of red that exclaimed "YOU FUCKED UP!" while physically saying something calm like: "There has been an unexpected error. Please attempt to blah blah blah."
Learning about himself some more, that was nice. He evidently had little patience for computers. That was progress.
The "important text" indicated by the aforementioned "blah blah blah" in this case was "Please contact a system administrator for bypass through the mainframe." This sounded particularly ominous since the admins seemed to all be dead - he glanced around just to make sure there wasn't one hiding in a corner - and the mainframe happened to be occupied by the conglomeration.
He wondered how many times one had to call something by an adjective before that adjective became a proper noun...
Kevin tapped the 'Help' button and studied the diagram with a sinking heart. The conglomeration wasn't directly on top of the access point he was headed to, but as the saying went, "close enough for government work." He wouldn't be able to avoid this fight...
He checked his store of ammunition and cursed. This was going to be as close to impossible as anything might actually be.
For a brief moment he wished Blanchard was by his side. Or Andere... Hell, even Graves. So many deaths in such a short time. He had no intention of returning to space if he ever made it out of this alive. From here on in, planet-based.
